We should be gathering a plethora of information from autopsies as many of these "unexplained deaths" should have triggered autopsies and/or investigations of some kind.

Yes, there is ignorance vs. willful ignorance. Being willfully ignorant always gives the "plausible deniability" way out. "Gee, I didn't know the gun was loaded, I'm not an armorer" type of thing. That being said medicine is a complicated subject and us lay people trying to get straight information is often difficult.
